my aperturic annual – 06.15.10

Don’t worry.  I’ve reprimanded myself appropriately for not taking a shot yesterday.  No real good excuse as to why, really.  I’d intended to bring my camera over to my sister’s house to document my nephew’s fantastic walking skills or something wonderful of the like.  Then, I drove off without bringing my camera with me.  Didn’t realize I was sans camera until after I’d walked in their front door.  I’m an idiot.

So today I’m posting two from today’s assignment: getting an unexpected view of an everyday activity.

My friend Taryn and I took a grilling class today at The Culinary Center of Kansas City.  I decided to bring along my camera and try to work a bit on photojournalistic storytelling.  Here is the result.

The class was on grilling, in case the photo didn’t speak clearly enough.

my aperturic annual – 06.11.10

June 12th, 2010

Today’s post would be an example of the warning I offered regarding how “not every image is going to be brilliant”.  I mean…it’s brilliant, but maybe not in ways that I would like to challenge myself creatively.  Instead, today’s image is simply a photo of a memory I want to keep from this great life I’m being given the chance to live.  These three gents are friends of mine from church, and they are the great men building my deck.  I love having them around as they are constant sources of humor.  I am specifically thankful for them because with my dad recovering from hip surgery, I really have to trust in the help of others to do things like this – and they are, most definitely, trustworthy.  It’s nice to have contractors around that you feel completely comfortable letting in and around your home…and to know they are working on projects with the kind of detail they would in their own houses.

And yes, in case you were wondering, those pink glasses are the ones I wore to my roller skating birthday party.  Marvin found them mid-project and has opted to wear them as his safety goggles while working.  Not sure what kind of protection they really offer, but isn’t there a saying about seeing the world through rose colored lenses??

Today, I came home from a long, long day at work.  It was a great day, but it was long.  And what better way to relax after a long day at work than to lay out on a deck?  Yeah…a deck.

(For those of you unaware, I have not had a deck until today.  Thus, its brilliance.)

There I was, lying on my back, enjoying the breeze, watching the amber light of sunset break through the leaves of the tree above when I realized, “This is my shot for the day!”  I scampered like a bunny to my basement to retrieve my handy camera bag, knowing the beauty of that light would soon dissipate.  I returned to my position and pulled out a lens.  And then…the unthinkable happened: the humidity from this stupid summer heat fogged over the lens, as well as the innards of my camera body.  Boooooooooooo.

As I waited for my camera and lens to adjust to its surroundings, the light changed and my magical moment was lost.  Sad.  I did, however, manage to enjoy this view for a minute as I sat up before heading inside.  This view, mind you, will not be available tomorrow when the railing and steps are built.  So…maybe this moment was, in fact, my shot for the day.

I love knowing this deck will provide the perfect spot to unwind, to entertain, to grill, to grow herbs…and I love knowing that it makes my home feel even more like the home I have dreamed of making it.

Life is sweet.  Especially when barefoot.
