the grand canyon? i’d say it’s GORGE-ous

My very good friend Taryn and I headed to Arizona the end of of May and had an incredible week exploring the surrounding areas of Sedona. It was a fantastic time…one of my absolute favorite trips ever. We flew into Phoenix, took the long and scenic way up to Sedona via the mountains, and saw wonderful things along the way. Like this…

On our second day in Sedona, we started by going shopping in a little village called Tlaquepaque (see image above). It was one of my favorite places in Sedona. It felt like Spain and the desert got together and made a baby. Then, we went off-road Jeeping in the Red Rocks. It was a rush, and we definitely saw parts of Sedona we would have not seen on foot (or a Ford Fusion, for that sake). I was mesmerized by the color and shape of the stones, and that deep blue sky. Oh, my goodness. Beauty.

Then we drove into a neighboring town called Jerome that used to be a huge copper mining area. We shopped around, drank some wine, and enjoyed the view. It was lovely.

Can I tell you how much I was obsessed with desert foliage? It’s insane. I feel like it has the thumbprint of God all over it. From the purple cactus with chartreuse flowers, to the weird pod like trees with these amazing blossoms, everywhere I went I was like a kid entering Narnia where everything was fresh and new.

One of our days there, we drove out to the Grand Canyon. Oh. My. Gosh. I literally was breathless seeing it for the first time. Tears, streaming down my face. Overwhelmed at what is clearly a demonstration of the majesty of God. We spent some time hiking down into it. Then we watched the sunset. To date, it is one of the most profound things I have experienced in this life. Seriously…if you haven’t seen it, put it on your Bucket List. There’s just nothing like it.

Our last night in Sedona, Taryn and I watched the sun set over the Red Rocks. It was again, breathtaking. I love Arizona. The weather is perfect. The landscape is so incredible. It was a rich week. So glad I had the chance to be there.

(For the record, this last photo is literally straight out of camera. I didn’t do anything in Photoshop to make it look more striking than it was. For real.)
A gorge is, by definition, the very opposite of grand. Narrow vs. expansive.
